People don't like differences so when the latent mutant gene was activated in people across the world many reacted with alarm believing that whilst they could be a force for good, their superhuman abilities also posed a threat and that threat became very real when people like the Leper Queen captured several mutants and injected them with a modified strain of the Legacy Virus to cause their powers to go berserk and kill themselves and thousands of humans.
